Job Details

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an editor to oversee the strategy of our digital programming and to manage the teams most directly connected to the strategy work tied to content and programming.

The Programming Strategy Editor is a news-oriented job overseeing our strategy and ongoing iteration around our thinking on which user or user segment sees what, when, where and in what shape, on both our own platforms and off platform.

This includes the full process from start to finish in large project planning in all mediums and formats, as well as a role in the guidelines for programmatic thinking about our ongoing content posting.

You will also have a mandate to create content practice guidelines and templates that lead to higher quality traffic and/or higher engagement.

This mandate extends over all digital mediums and formats -- video, audio, digital graphics, photography, text, etc. -- on and off site.

You will be in continuous conversation with the Programming Editor in the News Hub about story and multimedia placements. You won't be responsible for carrying out the operations or communications of the Journal's programming.

This separation in duties -- strategic vs. operational -- will give you the time to audit and strategize around our placements and to manage the teams that are most critical to developing the tools we need to maximize the impact of our coverage.

In this role, you will manage the following groups: social and distribution strategy, new formats, and the strategy editors embedded within the coverage areas.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Change how the newsroom thinks about digital programming
  • With the Chief News Strategist, other Strategy leaders, the Chief News Editor, Programming Editor and Editor in Chief: Define the medium- and long-term journalism strategy for the Journal on all platforms. Uphold WSJ values and mission as well as audience-centric quality standards and ideals for continually iterative creative storytelling on all platforms.
  • Work as a partner with the Programming Editor on a daily basis to learn and iterate based on audience and news data as well as journalism imperatives.
  • Work with the rest of the Strategy team to put new digital capabilities into practice in newsroom projects and to make connections within news coverage areas.
  • Establish the best content experiences and evangelize for them among the broader newsroom.
  • Take the lead in coaching the coverage chiefs and their deputies on creative coverage planning, multimedia and multiplatform topic preparation and innovative storytelling. Work with the Programming Editor to monitor progress.
  • Break new ground on our understanding of digital programming and continually push for better insights and practices:
  • Effective management of the teams within the Digital Programming Strategy unit is a key part of this job. Those teams consist of people with a large variety of skills and backgrounds, and you must work to elevate the best of all the different points of view and find balances within these multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ongoing conversations with other leaders in Strategy about priorities and initiatives is a must to keep this unit and the newsroom more broadly in sync with our changing technology and audience priorities.
  • As we move away from one-size-fits-all programming, you must have a keen understanding of different audiences and be able to tie the Journal's signature styles and ethics to new ways of reaching and resonating with audiences.
  • Work with the content experiences team and editorial algorithms team, in particular, to push our technology in the directions most aligned with our audience and news strategy. The content experiences team includes all the engineering related to our story formats and video/audio players as well as changes related to SEO and other audience-growth tactics. The editorial algorithms team will drive our work on personalization.
  • You will have representatives -- embedded strategy editors -- in the key coverage areas and will work very closely with the Chief News Strategist to help those representatives stay informed about all things going on across the Strategy unit so that those editors can be close partners with Coverage Chiefs in achieving our strategic goals.

Leadership

  • Lead with a journalism hat on, first and foremost, and keep a strong focus on the value we create for all of our audiences. You will help communicate these values with the broader Strategy and PDE unit.
  • Inspire our journalists to produce their best work on all platforms.
  • Advocate for innovation in the way we do our journalism.
  • Contribute by attitude, example and encouragement to a culture of creativity, enthusiasm, motivation, ownership and professionalism.
  • Motivate the staff to consistently produce high-quality work.
  • Contribute to the shaping and management of staff-development programs.

Key Knowledge / Experience

  • Deep understanding of the brand values and mission of the Journal and how our journalism should be selected and presented in line with those values.
  • Deep understanding of our audiences and how to use insight research and analytics to continually refine this understanding.
  • At home in digital media environments and print, with a track record of editing in both. Solid grasp of video as a content format.
  • Full and evolving knowledge of best practices for digital content -- SEO, promotion, etc.
  • Comfortable selecting and presenting the best, most relevant journalism in all formats.
  • Understanding of modern and innovative journalism and storytelling techniques.
  • Ability to lead and inspire our journalism team to come up with ideas.
  • Excellent communications skills. Know how to delegate, brief and give constructive feedback.
  • Sound organizational abilities: setting agendas, managing projects, forward planning for the coming days.
  • Innovative and creative thinker, leader and manager.

The job is based in New York and reports to Louise Story, the Journal's Chief News Strategist and Chief Product & Technology Officer.

You will work very closely with the leadership across strategy, coverage areas, video, audio, visuals, digital platforms, enterprise, weekend sections and special reports.
