Job Details

The Wall Street Journal is looking for someone passionate about news and product design for a leadership role as the Head of Design.

You will manage the Journal's design department and be responsible for the look and feel as well as the user experience of our digital products, on and off platform.

You will work across the organization -- with news editors, the membership team and anyone else who creates content and products on our platforms -- to ensure consistency in style and approach.

You will take a holistic approach to our aesthetics and experiences, throughout our strategies and in all of the mediums in which we work.

You will bring that perspective to our experimentation, our platforms/touchpoints, and our communication and evangelism around the newsroom and the company.

In decision making, audience data will be an important factor, though not the only factor. We need you to bring in our sense of style, connecting the dots between different aesthetics needed for different audiences.

You appreciate the traditions we have in print but recognize that some evolution is needed, as we push our aesthetic forward with new audiences in mind.

We need someone capable of collaborating across the organization: You will work in coordination with the Journal's own marketing.

The Head of Design is also a key partner with Journal's Head of Global Visuals in fostering collaboration and unifying approaches and workflows, where appropriate, between news graphics and the design team.

You will work closely with other leaders in the Strategy unit to look at what visual experiences are most effective with audiences and with the Programming Strategy Editor to advocate for content practices that drive engagement.

Job Requirements:

  • Digital news leadership experience.
  • Strong knowledge in all digital mediums as well as expertise in brand identity and UX/UI.
  • Ability to move fast to lead new designs tied to news events but also the ability to work on a development style.
  • Commitment to creating visual experiences that are reusable, where appropriate.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills and the ability to train people, bring them along on the journey and create an atmosphere of inclusion.

The job is based in New York and reports to Louise Story, the Journal's Chief News Strategist and Chief Product & Technology Officer.
