REPORTING TO: Head of Digital

JOB PURPOSE:

To work across Channel 4 News digital platforms, helping find the widest audience possible for linear programme video content. To produce high impact original content for social media as well as contributing to the wider Channel 4 News editorial output.

To also produce written content for digital audiences on social media, in newsletters and our the Channel 4 News website. To secure maximum impact for Channel 4 News’ digital and television material online, with particularly reference to Facebook.

This role will be a rotating evening shift pattern and may involve other shift and weekend work, and travel.

KEY TASKS / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work across Channel 4 News digital platforms – with a focus on producing daily content for Facebook from our programme content and written content such as newsletters and social media content.
  • Help grow our audience across Facebook.
  • Help grow our loyal base of subscribers on newsletters.
  • Produce original stories, interviews and coverage across a wide range of social media platforms and the website.
  • To assist with audience development and digital engagement.
  • Write and edit news stories and blogs for the website using the Content Management System.
  • To contribute to wider content, scripting and edit television and agency material with social platforms in mind – securing millions of views for our content in the digital world.
  • Generate ideas and bring in distinctive, exclusive stories that meet the high editorial standards of Channel 4 News, pitched at a digital first audience.
  • Show distinctive judgement about digital storytelling – with confidence about what elements will resonate with an online audience and what will perform in the medium.
  • Provide imaginative treatments for complex stories and present complex ideas simply and in a compelling manner.
  • Ensure stories are accurate and comply with the law and relevant regulations.
  • Maintain the highest standards of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Make engaging thumbnails and share cards for videos and written stories.
  • Work in accordance with ITN guidelines on health and safety in the office and in the field.
  • Work on the output, news-desk, site-editing, other teams if required following training.
  • Occasionally work in the field, at home and abroad, during breaking news.
  • Occasional work with independent reporters or companies.
  • Deal professionally with members of the public and guests.


KEY ATTRIBUTES / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A digital native who works to the highest editorial standards.
  • Proven track record in producing multimedia content for social, with good knowledge of video and written content.
  • A good working knowledge of video editing software is desirable.
  • An experienced journalist or digital producer with 2-3 years experience dealing with the highest standards of accuracy and attention to detail around often complex and controversial material.
  • Expert understanding and knowledge of social media and experience working across a wide variety of platforms.
  • Strong writing skills – experience working on newsletter is desirable.
  • Strong team-working skills.
  • Strong digital news judgement – with a knowledge of what will play well on social and user journeys from social to owned and operated platforms.
  • Ability to innovate in formats on TV and digital media.
  • Experience of writing for and posting online content via a Content Management System.
  • Knowledge and experience of news and current affairs.
  • High quality news judgement, editorial creativity and imagination.
  • Ability to work autonomously and under own initiative.
  • Flair for expressing stories visually and an excellent writing ability.
  • Technical adaptability and flexibility.
  • Highly developed understanding of complex legal situations and understanding of ITN Legal Compliance procedures.
  • Understanding of Channel 4 News agenda.
  • Good interpersonal skills, team player with personal authority and the ability to manage a group of people.
  • Calm under pressure with the ability to adapt and be flexible in task and role.
  • Ability to work to a deadline.
  • Play an authoritative role in team editorial meetings presenting ideas in a persuasive manner.
  • Act with responsibility and common sense in the field and office, in compliance with ITN’s Health and Safety Policies.
