The Economist is looking for an experienced assistant producer to work across Economist radio - the feature podcasts (Babbage, Money Talks, Editor’s Picks, The Economist Asks) and The Intelligence.

The ideal candidate is organised, has great interpersonal skills and is keen to develop their production skills.

You will be working alongside producers and senior producers on daily and feature podcasts for a global audience.

The role entails:

  • Helping produce packages, organizing interviews and booking guests
  • Researching story and guest ideas
  • Assisting producers with briefs and long-term bids
  • Preparing the studio for recordings, coordinating studio bookings internally
  • Locating and booking external studios
  • Finding stringers and organising mic-holds/tape syncs
  • Overseeing and improving internal administrative systems
  • Assisting Economist journalists with recording equipment, logging equipment
  • Assisting producers with publication on podcast platforms (acast scheduling, soundcloud logos etc)
  • Assisting with on-air diversity initiatives
  • Assisting with promotional assets for social media


The assistant producer should also be comfortable with recording in the field or the studio, and have some experience editing audio on Adobe Audition and/or Pro Tools.

Candidates should have a love of podcasting and a keen interest in current affairs.

The ability to remain calm under deadline pressure or when technology fails, attention to detail, a strong work ethic, professionalism and intra-office skills are essential.

Requirements:

  • Experience of working in radio/podcasts and with producers
  • Technical experience in a radio studio and dealing with ISDN lines/recording equipment
  • Experience of booking studios and guests
  • Experience of researching news stories and writing interview briefs
  • Sharp attention to detail
  • Ability to work diplomatically with a wide variety of people
  • Evidence of successful collaboration with colleagues
  • Track record of being enterprising and eager to take initiative
  • An understanding of The Economist’s distinctive style and values
