i, Britain’s youngest national title, is growing in print and online, and we’re recruiting a Deputy Sports Editor to join our busy, expanding newsroom.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have experience of working in a decision-making role, preferably on the sports desk of a daily newspaper.
  • Be confident instructing members of the team to write and undertake other tasks.
  • Be able to deputise for the sports editor and lead the team in his absence.
  • Be able to work calmly and efficiently to multiple daily deadlines across print, app and digital platforms.
  • Come armed with ideas every day on how to improve i's journalism.
  • Be organised and plan ahead, liaising with the sports editor on daily and weekly plans.
  • Be happy to work on a shift rota basis, including weekend and evening work.
  • Engage with younger and older audiences without alienating either.
  • Explain complex ideas in a simple and accessible way.
  • Create and deliver an original content plan for inews.co.uk's loyal audience and the inews UK app, identifying new communities, serving our loyal audience and helping to power audience growth.
  • Bring in exclusives for inews.co.uk and the paper - from back-page scoops to interviews and features.
  • Have exceptional instincts for high-performing content on social.
  • Understand how to use social channels to source and promote quality journalism.
  • Have the ability to work quickly, creatively and accurately under pressure, to tight deadlines, honouring our high standards.
  • Share key insights across the editorial operation.
  • Represent the title through public and media engagements.
  • Have a passion for the i project, and understand i's journalism, ethos and audience.


Qualifications and experience:

Essential:

  • Experience of commissioning or editing for print or digital publications.
  • Experience of working in a newsroom to tight deadlines.
  • A good contacts book of writers, sportspeople and other industry figures.
  • Track record of writing or commissioning quality pieces which make an online impact.
  • Experience of promoting journalism effectively on social media.
  • An obsessive eye for accuracy and fact-checking.
  • Media law and IPSO knowledge through in-work training, an NCTJ qualification or other journalistic qualification.
  • SEO knowledge and strong headlining skills for online.


Desirable:

  • Good numerical skills and ability to understand and analyse audience reports to identify trends.
