Job purpose:

The Independent is recruiting a News Editor to play a central role in driving coverage, leading major stories, developing exclusives with correspondents and presenting in conference.

The successful candidate will be a team player, with a deep understanding of all aspects of online journalism.

You must be a confident and experienced leader who thrives under the pressure of working in a fast-paced newsroom. Experience of homepage editing will also be an advantage.

Key responsibilities:

  • Commission, edit and publish breaking news stories and longer-term exclusives
  • Be a newsroom leader capable of driving coverage of major stories
  • Present daily and weekend news lists to the editor in conference
  • Have expert knowledge of media law
  • Write engaging headlines for all articles, including news, features and analysis
  • Work closely and collaboratively with other senior editors and department heads
  • Work with the audience team to ensure articles reach widest possible readership
  • Work a rota that includes weekend shifts


Skills and experience:

  • At least two years’ experience in a similar role for a newspaper or news website
  • A proven track record of editing breaking news under intense deadline pressure and working with reporters to develop longer-term projects
  • Skilled at writing enticing headlines 
  • Understanding of how to use SEO and social media to drive audience engagement
