Your role:

The Sun is looking for a Features Writer to cover a 9 month maternity contract.

You will be responsible for commissioning and finding stories, liaising with experts for features and generating ideas. Due to the nature of the role, there is a requirement to attend out of hours events and interviews.

Day to day you will: 

  • Delivering creative, original ideas for the section that will be relevant, news-worthy and engaging for our readers. 
  • Writing impeccable and colourful copy to the highest standard to tight deadlines
  • Organising photoshoots with clear, concise and creative briefs to best accompany copy
  • Keeping your finger on the pulse with regards to topics dominating the news
  • Using your contacts to commission features, overseeing briefs and shoots. 
  • Responding to subs queries efficiently, often out of hours. 
  • Using initiative and taking ownership of your own features from beginning to end 
  • Working closely and in collaboration with other departments within the company.
  • Making and maintaining great contacts with PRs and freelance writers. 
  • Recognising and acting upon any potential legal issues and acting in accordance with IPSO regulations and guidelines.


What we’re looking for from you: 

  • A brilliant writer and interviewer who always gets the tone right and has excellent attention to detail. 
  • A strong news sense who is able to seek out relevant stories.
  • The know-how to find the best case studies from a wide variety of sources
  • Outstanding contacts with PRs and agents.
  • An expert knowledge of sun friendly reader topics and issues.
  • Relevant experience on a magazine or newspaper. 
  • Willingness to go the extra mile and ability to turn hand to interviews, real-life features, copy-editing and getting exclusives
