Purpose of role:

We are looking to recruit a Head of PR / Deputy Leader Writer for The Sun.

Your role: 

  • Help shape the development and implementation of a communications and media relations strategy, in print, digital and broadcast media. 
  • Be the internal expert and go-to person for advice and support on PR activities.
  • Daily liaison with journalists to drive the broadcast media programme for The Sun. This includes all sections of the papers and covers scoops, exclusives, interviews, investigations and serialisations.
  • Spokesperson for the paper on important editorial issues and responsibility for crisis management communications within the demanding and unpredictable daily news cycle.
  • Build strong relationships with broadcasters and media contacts ensuring they have all the relevant information about our content, editorial teams and key selling points.
  • Work closely with commercial departments to inform, shape and deliver ideas that help to promote The Sun to readers and advertisers.
  • Regularly write the “Sun Says” editorial column in the absence of the Chief Leader Writer.


What we’re looking for from you: 

  • Understands and cares about The Sun DNA and how it works for paper and non-paper platforms.
  • Can describe what a Sun purchaser wants and how this can be delivered on different platforms.
  • Strong senior editorial background.
  • Able to scan the environment and spot how future trends can work successfully for Sun purchasers.
  • Can think longer term to generate innovative ideas, and can contribute ideas on a day to day basis. 
  • Able to influence the Sun newsroom, to think differently and get stuff done.
  • Is brave, challenging and creative.
  • Keen interest in politics and awareness of current issues.
  • Understanding of The Sun’s editorial positions on wide range of stories and topics.
  • Talent for writing succinct and punchy copy.
