Job Details

Liberty is an independent membership organisation. We challenge injustice, defend freedom and campaign to make sure everyone in the UK is treated fairly.

We are campaigners, lawyers and policy experts who work together to protect rights and hold the powerful to account. We empower others to defend their own rights and the rights of their family, friends and communities.

Our principles are guided by evidence and expertise – not political agenda, profit or popular opinion. We’re not afraid to speak uncomfortable truths or confront intolerance and abuse of power wherever we find it.

Together we’ve been making the UK a fairer, more equal place since 1934.

We are looking for an experienced, creative and ambitious person to lead our fantastic Communications Team in exposing threats to rights to the spotlight of public scrutiny through the press and social media.

You will forge collaborative partnerships; reach new audiences; influence public discourse on human rights and ensure Liberty is leading the conversation; influence across the political spectrum; maintain and grow Liberty’s high profile and brand; work with our Investigative Unit to break stories; and keep Liberty at the cutting edge of digital communications.

The post-holder will be innovative and strategic, with substantial experience in a senior communications role, excellent judgment, strong project management skills, a thorough understanding of and interest in the media, politics and current affairs, and the ability to expertly navigate today’s multi-channel communications.

They will have the ability to process complex issues swiftly, turning them into consistent, engaging and persuasive messages and communications strategies that resonate with a diverse range of audiences, from judges to journalists and politicians to the public.

The Communications Director will join Liberty’s Senior Management Team, line managing four people directly, with responsibility for a team of five.

They will work closely and collaboratively with all Liberty’s teams, editors and producers, partner organisations and campaigners to promote our work, expose and challenge injustice and amplify the voices of those directly affected by the issues we campaign on.

They will be a fair, compassionate and collegiate colleague, committed to building an inclusive organisational culture and nurturing our staff.

We welcome applications from everyone but, as disabled people and members of ethnic minority groups are currently under-represented at this level of post, we encourage applications from members of these groups. Appointment will be based on merit alone.
