The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced Graphics Editor to join an award-winning team of visual journalists to drive innovative storytelling with graphics, design, interactives, and multimedia across our platforms, based in New York.

The Graphics Editor will be responsible for managing and driving strong visual design in our stories with a focus on enterprise news, features, with opportunities to work with other areas as needed.

The Graphics Editor will report to the Visual Editor of that desk and make decisions and recommendations related to coverage priorities and assignments.

The Graphics Editor will schedule and run regular brainstorming meetings with reporters and editors and work closely with video and photo editors.

The Graphics Editor will review pitches and provide ideas, expertise and judgment around which visuals should be assigned for stories.

The Graphics Editor will contribute to creating enterprise and breaking news graphics and story designs.

The Graphics Editor will support senior editors in the department as needed on broader leadership work, such as managing special projects or editing ambitious visual stories.

Responsibilities:

  • Schedule and run regular meetings with reporters and editors to shape ideas into visual opportunities.
  • Review visual pitches and ideas and decide on assignments using judgment and expertise.
  • Work closely with supervisor and broader department to assign stories.
  • Generate new ideas and implement news design systems and tools, including for breaking news, planned coverage, long-form narratives and interactives.
  • Create enterprise and breaking news visuals for digital, with a strong understanding of print requirements.
  • Shape new workflows and processes in a fast-paced, global and cross-platform newsroom.
  • As well as creating visual stories, the editor will contribute to editing visual stories.


Job requirements:

  • A minimum of two years of experience in a newsroom, ideally 3-6 years.
  • A creative vision and willingness to share and collaborate on new ideas.
  • Expertise with business news graphics, charting, multimedia and other design and data visualization techniques.
  • Excellent knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and its libraries.
  • Fluency in Adobe CS, Sketch or other design tools.
  • Experience working with graphics, video, audio and photography.
  • Expertise with responsive design and best practices for designing stories for mobile devices.
  • Expertise with layout, typography, color and interaction design.
  • Experience with data journalism and associated tools, such as Excel, SQL, R and Python is desirable.
  • Able to work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • The initiative to take on and learn new tasks in a fast-moving environment.
  • Able to schedule and run effective meetings in person or remotely.
  • Able to prioritize best opportunities for visual stories using judgment based on newsroom and departmental strategy and resources.
  • Able to train reporters and editors to learn new skills that will contribute to their visual storytelling.
  • Able to help reporters, editors and other visual journalists learn new skills that will raise the quality and focus on design throughout the newsroom.
  • Excellent news judgement and communication skills.
