We are looking for a Deputy Chief Sub-Editor to join the Vogue International team. This role will report to the Chief Sub-Editor and will work within the Editorial team across all digital content from fashion features to social copy.

This is the ideal role for a true wordsmith with a forward thinking approach to digital journalism.

The Deputy Chief Sub-Editor will work closely with the News and Features desk, supporting the Chief Sub in managing workflow; proofing copy, checking for spelling, grammar and factual accuracy; and ensuring external commissions are filed on deadline.

The sub will also copy edit and rework articles to ensure they are optimised for the end platform or content type (onsite, video and social media: instagram, snapchat, facebook etc); and localise content for specific markets and cultures (in English) as required.

The role will suit a calm, driven, well organised and super efficient individual, confident in a fast-paced and agile environment, with experience of creating and adapting copy in response to business demands.

You should be fully immersed in editorial and with a good understanding of the fashion industry and corresponding language.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  • Work closely with the Chief Sub and editorial colleagues within the Vogue International team to copy edit, restructure articles and shorten text as required to a consistently high standard.
  • Support the Chief Sub in driving workflow of the News and Features desk, keeping track of features timings and deliverables, chasing copy to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Proof read and fact check meticulously to ensure accuracy across all published content and clarify/amend where needed.
  • Provide heads, sells and social copy in keeping with the Vogue house style and optimised for SEO and a digital audience.
  • Work closely with the Translations Editor to provide a clean master copy of all text in English, appropriate for global adaptation.
  • Refer to relevant imagery provided by the photo desk to check captions and credits are as accurate as they can be.
  • Sub Snapchat and Instagram copy, tone appropriate to our younger audience.
  • Keep the Vogue International style guide up to date.
  • Pass all sensitive copy via the Chief Sub for legal review.
  • Upload content to the central planning system and file to markets in the Chief Sub’s absence.
  • Become a super-user of the CMS, confidently uploading and editing content in situ'.
  • Fully understand the schedules, deadlines and production processes such that you can deputise for the Chief Sub in their absence.
  • Contribute as part of a content team, taking part in ideas meetings, pitching stories and writing original, engaging copy for Vogue globally.


Essential Skills & Requirements:

  • Demonstrable experience in a digital or print publishing or a fast-paced media environment at Senior or Deputy Sub-Editor level.
  • An understanding of fashion and celebrity relevant to Vogue from a previous professional environment.
  • Proficient copy editing and sub-editing skills, including meticulous fact checking and proofing.
  • Skilled at producing heads and sells, optimised for digital platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Proactive with excellent self management and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong understanding of what makes a great article and how to engage readers with excellent content.
  • Comfortable working within a global company and liaising with writers / translators across different time zones.
  • Excellent international knowledge and cultural sensitivity.


Desirable Skills:

  • Social media experience with a knowledge of search engine optimised content.
  • Experienced writer in a relevant area of content (fashion, travel, arts, beauty etc).
  • Good knowledge of the fashion industry, designers and seasonal trend
