Job Details

Who are we?

Dialogue Earth is an independent non-profit dedicated to producing exceptional environmental journalism and informed conversations on urgent climate and sustainability topics. Our unique model brings local voices to global audiences and global stories of hope, action and change to local communities.

Dialogue Earth researches, writes, commissions, edits and publishes news reports and analyses of environmental and climate threats, to stimulate the exchange of information and ideas between readers in diverse geographies.

We are committed to accurately portraying China’s development impacts across the Global South through geopolitically even-handed reporting and constructive dialogue. A UK-registered charity headquartered in London, our approach is rooted in a network of specialist country editors located across South and Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America, and delivered through reporting in eight languages, workshops and media partnerships.

We seek to bring light, rather than heat, to crucial debates, and solutions to bear on complex problems.

The role

Dialogue Earth is seeking a part-time commissioning editor focused on the Himalayan region. The role involves commissioning and writing news, analysis and opinion pieces on critical topics, such as climate change, transboundary cooperation, energy and environmental issues impacting the region. As part of The Third Pole project, the editor will collaborate closely with the Asia Pacific and South Asia editors to emphasise the role of the Himalayas in the global climate framework. Special attention will be given to glaciers, transboundary rivers, innovation and the evolving energy landscapes of key Himalayan nations like Nepal and Bhutan, as well as Himalayan areas within India, Pakistan, China and others.

Main responsibilities:

  • Commission and curate articles on climate, energy and environmental issues in the Himalayas;
  • Collaborate with regional editors to identify and shape storylines that reflect the region’s importance in global environmental discussions;
  • Focus on issues related to glaciers, transboundary rivers and energy transitions in key countries;
  • Ensure high editorial standards for all commissioned pieces;
  • Build and maintain a network of local journalists, environmental experts and stakeholders to ensure access to diverse perspectives and story leads.

Essential experience, knowledge and skills:

  • A commitment to the work of Dialogue Earth;
  • Experience in environmental journalism or a related field;
  • Strong understanding of geopolitical and environmental issues in the Himalayan region;
  • Excellent editorial and writing skills, with the ability to commission compelling, well-researched stories;
  • Collaborative mindset and the ability to work with editors across different regions and time zones.

Compensation:

This is a flexible, part-time role, with payment based on the number of stories commissioned. The editor will be paid $250 USD per commission, with an upper limit of 4 commissioned stories per month.

Subject to the approval of the Asia Pacific and South Asia editors, we are also open to the editor writing their own pieces for Dialogue Earth, to be paid at the standard rate.

How to apply

  • Please send a CV with references, relevant clippings and a cover letter explaining how you meet the requirements of the role to: apply@dialogue.earth.
  • The application deadline is 5pm GMT on Thursday, 31st October 2024.
  • Applications should be submitted in English. Applications and cover letters written entirely with AI will not be accepted.
  • We encourage applications from all regardless of age, sexuality, socio-economic background, disability, ethnicity, gender, religion or beliefs. We are committed to building a culture of belonging and inclusion, and this is reflected in our policies and practices.
