Role purpose and overview

The Associate News Editor is a senior member of the home news editing team. They will be primarily responsible for working with reporters to develop and execute agenda-setting exclusives and longer-lead stories. 

In this role, they will need to form strong relationships with departments across the newsroom such as graphics and the audience teams, to steer the overall presentation of these stories.

We require an original thinker who can suggest and deliver new angles on stories, and spot stories that other news editors may miss. They will also have the persistence and precision to ensure that copy is perfectly prosecuted to maximise the impact of these stories.

Key responsibilities

  • Building and developing a strong pipeline of exclusive news stories which will set the news agenda and attract and retain Telegraph subscribers
  • Attending key news conferences, presenting plans to senior editorial staff and briefing the team following the meetings
  • Liaising with other departments to ensure best possible coverage and presentation of, and audience for, news stories
  • Expected to work with specialist reporters and investigations to craft original ideas into news stories which have impact and are optimised across digital and print
  • Responsibility for editing reporters’ stories to promote the strongest news lines
  • Developing junior members of newsdesk and reporting staff
  • Attending planning meetings, taking responsibility for managing and presenting plans to editor and other senior editorial staff

Key skills

  • A proven track record of news editing, and seeking out and developing exclusive stories in a mainstream national news outlet
  • Champions innovative news research and investigation techniques
  • Embraces digital content and creative ways to tell news stories to online audience
  • Strong ability to write and edit articles clearly, concisely and to house style
  • Good organisational skills - able to keep multiple projects on track and stakeholders up to date
  • Able to motivate others to work to high quality standards under pressure 
  • Stays abreast of industry developments and regulations
  • Addresses potential conflicts which impact delivery targets and responds to shifting priorities
  • Skilled and persuasive communicator
