Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Digital & Social Designer for WSJ. Magazine & its Style coverage area to help conceive, design and execute innovative multi-platform digital assets and experiences.

WSJ. Magazine and Style blend deep reporting, intelligent wit and good taste to create compulsively readable stories, analysis and features on the subjects of style, entertainment, celebrity, society, lifestyle and the arts. Visually, style content at The Journal takes many forms—reported articles, documentary videos, animations, photo essays, social media, merchandise, events and brand partnerships.

As the Digital Designer you should be comfortable taking projects from creative brief to completion while working closely with the WSJ. Magazine Design Director and overall art and visual departments, as well as the Platforms Director. This role requires speed and proficiency with digital design tools and a strong command of platform best-practices. The ability to work as part of a team is essential.

You will:

  • Design compelling and creative digital assets under the WSJ. Magazine brand, including social assets, treated photos or illustrations, video graphical elements, digital-events collateral and more
  • Translate complex conceptual and strategic ideas into graphic design solutions
  • Push the envelope for what a classic legacy brand can look and feel like digitally, with a command of typography, composition, messaging hierarchy and balance
  • Oversee the creative strategy of digital story presentation and elements, ensuring style and magazine features look and feel distinguished and inventive within the bounds of our web-publishing tools.
  • Optimize digital translations of WSJ. Magazine’s print editions for web and social, bringing creative ideas for new ways of presenting visual information.
  • Work with internal and outside collaborators (photo editors, digital editors, project managers, events teams, developers, illustrators and video editors) to optimize the digital design experience of all Style content.

You have:

  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years experience working within stylish media outlets or journalism brands, advertising agencies, creative studios, or other organizations with an emphasis on digital publishing
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere) as well as all social media platforms and Google products
  • A strong understanding and general skills around motion graphics and social video.
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, front-end design styling and ability to use a basic CMS.
  • Understanding of user experience and responsive design trends.
  • Exciting, clearly articulated creative taste and strong visual sensibility
  • Passion and creativity for telling stories on digital platforms in innovative ways, and a desire to constantly push the creative envelope while working within the framework of an established brand.

This position is based in our New York office.

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job and a link to a portfolio of your relevant work.
