The Sunday Times is looking for an experienced editor to deputise to the Editor of The Sunday Times Magazine.

The successful applicant will support the management of our team of writers, editors, production staff and freelance contributors.

You will have precise commissioning and copy-editing skills, an extensive contacts book and demonstrable expertise in current affairs, culture, people, society and technology. Applicants must be bursting with original ideas for topical features; and understand how best to present our stories to our digital audiences.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support the Editor in all aspects of the editing of the magazine and management of the team, including editing to cover holiday and absence. 

  • Conceive and deliver distinctive and engaging content that appeals to Sunday Times readers, with high quality analysis and expertise

  • Work with reporters, writers and audience experts to develop exclusive story ideas

  • Work with production colleagues in design, pictures and sub-editing to produce high-quality content as efficiently as possible, meeting deadlines

  • Forward-plan, working with journalists on long-range projects

  • Attend news conference and present to the editor as required

  • Develop talent and support progression of staff 

  • Use data analytics, SEO and Google Trends to help guide commissioning

  • Use social networking and other digital platforms to promote The Sunday Times Magazine content

  • Work collaboratively with all internal departments including commercial, marketing, production, finance and HR 

  • Support the management of the budget for the department

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Experience of working as a senior editor for a national magazine, newspaper or major digital news outlet

  • Demonstrable expertise in current affairs, culture, people, society and technology

  • An understanding of how audience data supports commissioning and how to promote a story on social media and through search engines

  • Knows how to attract and retain new digital audiences

  • An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy

  • Ability to communicate succinctly and effectively

  • Experience working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams 

  • Strong people management experience 

  • Persuasive presentation skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve

  • Experience of managing a department budget

  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
