Written predominantly by engineers and professionals, Racecar Engineering helps readers keep pace with news, products, technological developments and testing, providing informed analysis of results for the keen observer, industry expert or race enthusiast looking to expand their knowledge.

Working in collaboration with the Editor, the Deputy Editor is responsible for devising, writing, sourcing and flat planning content, editing copy, sub-editing and proofreading layouts, overseeing the day-to-day workflow of the magazine and assuming overall responsibility for the magazine and all associated projects in the Editor’s absence.

The Deputy Editor is responsible for editing and developing the Racecar Engineering website, posting regular content, writing newsletters and updating social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

The Deputy Editor is also responsible for assisting in the development and production of content for all brand extensions, including digimags, bookazines (single-issue premium magazines), supplements, apps, e-newsletters and digital editions, as well as maintaining the public and industry profile of the brand through social media, attending industry events and exhibitions and PR channels.

They will also need to be comfortable attending meetings with advertisers and be able to creatively interpret and accommodate the needs of the advertising team without compromising the integrity of the editorial.

Key responsibilities

  • Produce editorial content to the highest standards for both print and digital
  • Form strong working relationships with industry leaders and suppliers
  • Keep up to date with the latest information from international motor racing series
  • Flexible to attend events at weekends and travel internationally
  • Constant close liaison with the advertising team, working on future planning, commercially sensitive features, revenue-generating ideas
  • Liaise with the Editor, Publisher, subscriptions team and digital marketing team providing new ideas and leads for generating PR opportunities and subscription marketing ideas
  • Deputise for the Editor when necessary

Print content

  • Assist the Editor with content strategy and planning across all Racecar Engineering platforms
  • Work with the Editor to ensure editorial costs do not exceed budget
  • Devise, write, and commission print editorial content in collaboration with the Editor
  • Assist the Editor in managing the team of contributors to deliver high-quality content on time
  • Assist the Editorial team with picture research

Print production

  • Work with the Editor to manage the print production process ensuring all team members are on schedule to meet deadlines
  • Proofread layouts to ensure house style and eradicate both factual and literal errors
  • Work with the Editor to ensure the commercial and legal acceptability of all editorial content and maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation

Digital content

  • Manage the websites and social media accounts, creating or repurposing content to attract and maintain a highly engaged audience
  • Regularly update the website and social media channels with new material
  • Work with the digital team to create newsletter content, proofreading and approving content before it published

Key skills

  • Excellent technical writing and editing skills with at least two years of technical writing experience
  • Ability to write and curate informative content for highly engaged audiences to specific briefs and tight deadlines
  • Meticulous subbing, editing, fact-checking, proofreading and caption writing following brand style guides
  • Experience in using InDesign at a high level
  • Ability to assist the art editor with picture research
  • Good organisational and interpersonal skills to manage the flow of content from contributors
  • Excellent understanding of the digital publishing landscape and emerging media trends
  • Experience using analytics tools and data reports to increase engagement
  • Direct experience of producing digital content across the website, newsletter and social media platforms
  • Strong team player with excellent communication skills
