Job Details

The Telegraph needs a brilliant headline writer to ensure our headlines are the best they can be across all our digital platforms and serve to inform headlines in print.

The Headlines Editor will work on our integrated back bench, with responsibility for revising and improving headlines written by sub-editors to ensure they are tailored perfectly for The Telegraph’s audience.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with the heads of digital and print production to write and revise headlines that are sharp, engaging and accurate.
  • Use analytics to understand the Telegraph’s digital audience and write headlines that will attract a wide readership while also appealing to existing subscribers.
  • Test headlines using analytical tools to increase reach, engagement and clickthrough rate.
  • Communicate to all publishers within the newsroom what makes a good headline and share knowledge to build expertise.
  • Work with the Head of Social Media and the Head of Editorial SEO to ensure content is optimised, as appropriate, to reach the largest possible audience of prospective subscribers.

Key skills

  • Experience of working in a senior subbing role of a major news organisation
  • Ability to work quickly to meet deadlines, but also to think creatively about original new ways to tell stories
  • Track record of building engagement with a digital audience
  • Understanding of how to use data analytics
  • Understanding of Social Media and SEO
  • Excellent news sense and current affairs knowledge
  • Full knowledge of media law
