The Breaking News Editor will be responsible for overseeing and updating the Telegraph’s breaking news coverage online.

Please note: this is a fixed-term contract position.

Key responsibilities

  • Consistently delivering the biggest news stories of the day quickly and accurately for The Telegraph reader
  • Constantly monitoring breaking news and knowing which stories to write immediately, which to spike and which to watch for updates
  • Publishing appropriate digital channels, including social media, writing first versions of stories, keeping moving stories updated on the best lines throughout the day and filing copy for the paper
  • Live blogging major news
  • Being the go-to person for heads of department when it comes to breaking news - flagging lines to the news editor or foreign editor, new pictures to the picture editor and videos to the head of video
  • Take full responsibility for executing stories
  • Take responsibility for ensuring that the news section of the website features the appropriate news stories
  • Show proficiency in the use of social media and digital technology to find stories and verify information
  • Liaising with reporters and other departments: video, SEO, social to ensure best possible coverage of, and audience for, news stories
  • Comprehensive media law knowledge to allow for fast publishing
  • Broad contact list to bring in exclusive lines/breaking stories

Key skills

  • Previous experience working in a national or international newsroom
  • Proven ability to use a variety of sources to seek out and verify breaking stories
  • Ability to identify breaking news stories which would interest the Telegraph audience
  • Strong ability to write clean copy to tight deadlines
  • Have experience using a range of digital storytelling techniques, and know the best platform for different types of stories
  • Have a good working understanding of social media channels and be curious about digital technology and the future of news journalism
  • Previous live blog experience
  • Previous self-publishing experience
