ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting into the Group Creative Director, the Art Director is responsible for executing the visual and design direction of the homes brands. You will work seamlessly with the Group Creative Director and the senior team, taking responsibility for ensuring that the creative vision for House Beautiful and Country Living is implemented across all editorial platforms – print, digital, social and video – as well as all areas of revenue diversification: events, marketplaces and licensing partnerships. You will ensure that all aspects of the design relating to the homes brands, are maintained to a high level, with particular emphasis on print. You will be responsible for directing and producing modern layouts and arresting covers that deliver commercially on the newsstand. You will help to lead, manage and support the rest of the art team, delegating to them and liaising with the pictures team and other department heads.

Key Responsibilities –

  • To support the Group Creative Director to create a best-in-class art team and brilliant layouts and artwork delivery across all platforms on both homes brands.
  • Help effectively communicate the creative vision to the art team and the rest of the editorial teams
  • Make innovative design suggestions in all areas to ensure the homes brands continue to improve and grow creatively and commercially
  • Design standout covers that are both compelling and on-brand
  • Oversee any color correcting or retouching required.
  • Work with the Editors and relevant department heads to keep all aspects of the magazines fresh and innovative
  • Help ensure that the visual identity of the homes brands remains consistent (in owned channels and with commercial partners)
  • To source and/or commission illustration and still life photography if required.
  • Daily knowledge of the workflow and help ensure smooth running
  • Help mentor and train more junior members of the team.
  • Final-check pages for pdf generation with acute attention to detail, and check pdf proofs with the same level of attention.
  • Work closely with the art and production teams to ensure deadlines are safely met, with an ability to work flexibly and at pace
  • Constantly have one eye on the homes market and bring awareness of innovations happening to the GCD AND GED

  • Extensive experience of designing at a senior level on a consumer magazine
  • Innovative, calm under pressure and resourceful
  • Ability to develop close and collaborative working relationships
  • Ability to partner with line management to ensure the titles go from strength to strength
  • Ability to execute the vision of the Group Creative Director and Editors
