Your Role: You will oversee and lead overall editorial budget, operations and newsroom management. You will be the primary point of contact for our colleagues in all matters outside journalistic initiatives for The Sun including tech, commercial, ecommerce, marketing, facilities, HR and finance.  Be the key adviser to the Editor on operational and managerial activities. 

Day to day: 

  • Create ideas for cost saving and transformation, ensuring risks are mitigated. 

  • Create business cases and pitch for budget when required.

  • Work with finance on data analysis to identify inefficient areas.

  • Work with regional editors and desk heads to support them on budget and transformation requirements as we continue to grow our increasingly digital future.

  • Present budget and transformation initiatives to the Executive team.

  • Negotiate and manage execution of contracts and rates with suppliers.

  • Support managers and desk heads with all aspects of team management, including; recruitment, performance management, engagement, training and development.

  • Managing constant development and implementation of new structures to drive improvements and efficiencies.

  • Oversee decision-making on resolution of complaints and editorial compliance.

  • Manage columnist/retainer negotiations and contracts.

  • Support the management of new contracts with platforms and new referrers.

  • Input into future development of digital products and systems. Help to represent editorial in supporting strategic goals, helping to push development and identify problem areas.

  • Help to devise new workflows and launch and integrate new tech systems.

  • Risk management and disaster recovery responsibilities.

  • Support the Sun US team and ensure they are resourced sufficiently to continue profitable growth.

What we’re looking for from you: 

  • Track record of successful newsroom management; a leader with experience creating high performing teams with a strong understanding of digital journalism.

  • Strong commercial acumen and ability to lead budget management across a number of teams.     

  • Change Management, experience leading teams/ departments through all aspects of change from planning through to execution. 

  • Project Management.

  • Excellent communication skills, skilled in influencing and negotiating.
