Job Details

Are you an experienced journalist who is intrigued by the built environment and infrastructure? Do you have an interest in how political decisions impact investment in road, rail, airports, water and energy infrastructure? Do you want the articles you write or edit to influence people who deliver and maintain this essential infrastructure and support them in undertaking that task, while also moving towards carbon net zero?

New Civil Engineer (NCE) and newcivilengineer.com is the leading name in the civil engineering sector with a 50 year history of providing compelling, insightful and technically grounded news and features. It is the official magazine of the Institution of Civil Engineers and read by 50,000 both in the UK and internationally.

NCE is looking for a deputy editor to join the team to support the editor in developing, shaping and driving its content – both online and in print – and its events programme.

The role would suit someone looking to make the leap from a news or features editor role or moving from a deputy editor role on a smaller brand and looking to gain broader experience.

Key responsibilities

  • Reporting on the fast-paced world of civil engineering
  • Working to ensure deadlines are met for our Morning Brief and afternoon News Drop newsletter, as well as our monthly newsletter content
  • Working with the editor and other team members to provide content and hit deadlines for NCE’s monthly magazine
  • Chairing, presenting and hosting at NCE’s conferences and awards
  • Working on and hosting bespoke events for clients, such as round tables and webinars
  • Taking a lead on episodes of NCE’s podcast The Engineers Collective and its News Wrap video bulletin
  • Developing and maintaining high level contacts within the sector
  • Attending events in London and around the UK

Skills and Experience

  • A track record of overseeing high-quality journalism and delivering exclusive stories
  • Strong experience of news editing and taking the decisions required to ensure a news desk meets the needs of a title’s audience
  • Excellent writing and grammatical skills, as well as being a stickler for both accuracy and deadlines
  • Knowledge of the built environmental and government departments, in particular, is an asset
  • Experience on the trade press preferred
  • Knowledge of video editing would be a benefit, but not essential

Core Competencies

  • A thirst for news
  • The ability to turn a tip-off into a publishable news story
