You’ll see creativity and collaboration in action every day, as well as a commitment to transparency that ensures everyone knows how we are progressing. And we like to have fun along the way, with a range of social and reward & recognition opportunities taking place throughout the year.

Position

BBC Science Focus is looking for a News Editor. We’ve enjoyed considerable digital growth in the last 12 months, and we’re looking for someone to help us take this to the next level. The ideal candidate will have a passion for science and will be just as comfortable tweaking copy on InDesign, as they are working within a content management system (CMS) or picking out the perfect GIF for a tweet.

Primarily you will be responsible for the brand’s news output. In short, you’ll have an eye for science news that the general public will be talking about. You’ll pick out the most click-worthy stories from the newswires, build a contact book eager to feed you news leads, and pull together a news diary to help you navigate the hottest stories. You'll also support the team set an agenda across our different platforms, but most importantly of all, you’ll have a knack for writing great headlines.

Ideally, you’ll also be familiar with the likes of Google News, Google Discover and Apple News and understand the kind of content and strategies that will help us perform well there.

A science background is helpful for the role, as it’s useful to know what’s new and what isn’t, as well as where inaccuracies can creep in, but it isn’t essential.

We’ll also expect the successful candidate to contribute to our brand’s broader output: recording podcasts, writing longer form pieces and eventually joining us to explore new areas like video.

Ultimately, this is a role for someone with a passion for science and journalism, who’s bursting full of ideas. It would suit a journalist who’s already had some experience on a website or magazine, who’s looking to take on more responsibility and who’s keen to take on and build new parts of the SF brand.

For a full list of responsibilities, please see the job description (contact recruitment@ourmedia.co.uk)

  • An eye to what makes a great science story and what angle SF should take on it
  • Able to write succinct, clear and informative copy that conveys complex topics simply
  • A confident communicator who is happy working with different teams – internal and external, to produce brilliant content.
  • Tenacity to chase experts and interviewees, to get the access and insight our readers want
  • Visual thinker: able to digest data and marry images, infographics and copy to convey ideas
  • Confident with InDesign, Photoshop and content management systems
  • Experience writing for magazines and/or websites
  • Self-starter: able to build and grow their own work streams in order to get new projects up and running

We’re striving to create a more diverse and inclusive environment and to ensure our content is representative of all our audiences. We have established five internal D&I network groups to help our people feel supported and included, and to provide an open environment for people to network, mentor and exchange ideas, solutions, and experiences. We are currently working in a hybrid way, with around 3 days a week spent in our lovely purpose-built offices in central Bristol, and the rest of the week working from home.
