Construction is one of the biggest sectors in the UK economy, contributing more than £100bn to the country’s gross domestic product each year. From roads to railways, from offices to warehouses, the fruits of its work are ever-present in all of our lives. Construction News is looking for a features editor to help us dive deep into the political, regulatory, financial and legal developments shaping the health of the sector.

 

We are the leading provider of news, insight, and events for the UK construction industry. As features editor, you will take the lead on all CN’s long-form content, both online and in print, making a major contribution to the quality of CN’s output.

You are an experienced features editor looking to make the move to a high-profile publication or a senior reporter looking to take their first step into editing. You will possess the qualities to identify and execute articles on the most important topics important to our readership of senior construction professionals. politicians, the public, and mainstream media.

CN’s long-form content includes features, interviews, investigations, project reports, case studies and audience surveys.  You will regularly produce such material yourself and assist the Editor and Deputy Editor in allocating and scheduling long-form content tasks across the CN team and freelance journalists. You will also commission freelance writers to support the full-time team, when necessary. You will be expected to be a full and active member of the CN editorial team, writing shorter news articles.

Another important task is to take charge of CN’s opinion output, which involves reviewing a steady stream of op-ed pitches from the industry and guiding good suggestions through to publication. You will also proactively commission unpaid op-eds on key topics. Across all your work, you will be expected to maintain CN’s reputation for high-quality, insightful journalism, including investigations on hard-hitting topics that have a real-world impact. 

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Experienced journalist, ready to manage writers alongside completing your own work.
  • Relevant experience writing features and news material.
  • Skilled at building and maintaining the contacts needed to deliver insightful content.
  • Copy-editing skills to ensure long-form output is well structured, readable, and informative.
  • Familiar with journalism law and how to write effectively about a litigious industry.
  • Ready to offer guidance to other writers on angles and information gathering.
  • Experience working with both digital and print formats is preferable, as is familiarity with using analytics to help raise the performance of editorial output.  
  • The ability to tackle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ideally with an interest in the technical, financial, and political aspects of the construction industry.

  • Comfortable with the demands of digital-first publications.  
  • Highly organised, able to proactively plan and appropriately prioritise competing tasks.
  • Comfortable managing others, including external contributors delegating work, and providing guidance in a constructive way.
