Global Press Officer

£ 41,604 - £48,048 per annum
(We normally offer a starting salary at the start of the range)
Full-time (37.5h) /12 month Fixed Term Contract
Based in Islington, London

Greenpeace is an international campaigning organisation with 26 offices around the world. Our vision is a greener, healthier and more peaceful planet. We bring about change by investigating, documenting and exposing the causes of environmental destruction. And we take peaceful direct action to protect our Earth and promote solutions for a green, peaceful and more equitable future.

This is a fantastic new role in the Greenpeace UK’s news team for an experienced press officer who wants to make a difference in our efforts to tackle the climate and nature crisis.

As Global Press Officer you’ll make a key contribution to maximising positive news coverage for Greenpeace’s campaigns and investigations – especially by amplifying our stories on an international scale.

Acting as a bridge between our UK news team and Greenpeace offices around the world, you’ll deliver investigations, publications and other campaign outputs that have global scope. Building strong relationships with media organisations and individuals, including major non-UK news organisations, you’ll help to spot emerging issues and voices, assist in developing media strategies and take responsibility for specific projects or streams of work, as directed by the Head of News.

You’ll need a very strong understanding of how to use news coverage to win campaigns and some experience of delivering press work internationally.

Location: Islington, London. We are currently trialling a hybrid working model to enjoy the benefits of both office based and remote working. The current expectation is for staff to work from the office in Islington at least 40% of their time. Reasonable adjustments to the trial policy as well as specific office based needs will be considered for those with long term health conditions and disabilities.

Requirements
You'll have:

  • Experience providing media services to an organisation dealing with contested matters of public interest, with an understanding of a campaigning organisation’s media needs.
  • Experience as a press officer or journalist, with demonstrable, detailed knowledge of UK media.
  • Experience of generating news coverage in international outlets.
  • Ability to innovate in formulating and implementing media strategy.
  • Ability to prepare and write compelling press releases, media briefings and other materials.
  • Experience of developing contacts with journalists and other influential people.

We give you:

You’ll be encouraged to develop both personally and professionally, taking advantage of the wide range of learning and development opportunities available to our staff. We offer great benefits such as a generous pension scheme, subsidised lunches, free yoga and a wealth of well-being resources, just to name a few. Take a look at our Work for Greenpeace pages to find out more about what it’s like to work for us and why you should apply.

Our commitment to diversity:

At Greenpeace UK we are committed to advancing diversity, inclusion, equity and becoming anti-racist. We acknowledge that people from certain backgrounds are under-represented in environmental and campaigning organisations and want to do all we can to correct this. In particular, we want to be more representative of Britain’s diversity at senior levels of GPUK. If you have the skills we need and are a person of colour, disabled, LGBTQIA, non-binary, have a mental health condition, or if you identify as working class now or in the past, we would welcome an application from you.
