Job Details

Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal seeks an experienced, ambitious and versatile reporter to serve as a national correspondent in the central United States.

This position represents a special opportunity for a talented journalist to write about politics, economics, crime and the other issues that shape daily life in the U.S. heartland, as part of an expanding national news operation at the WSJ.

Candidates should be seasoned reporters and nimble writers, comfortable juggling such breaking news events as tornadoes, big crime stories and state and city politics with deeper enterprise reporting on the broader issues animating Americans, such as religion, race, immigration and demographic change.

You will:

  • Lead big breaking news coverage, working with colleagues around the newsroom to dominate stories and distinguish the WSJ from the competition.
  • Deliver ambitious enterprise stories that help the WSJ set an agenda on the leading national issues of the day.
  • Cultivate sources that allow you to break news and deliver scoops ahead of the competition.
  • Pursue stories on a range of topics and perspectives, and help produce audio, video and visual journalism.

You have:

  • Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to identify and execute important stories on deadline.
  • A demonstrated ability to tackle ambitious projects and find original approaches to coverage, and the motivation to work independently when needed.
  • A track record of finding and connecting with the communities, businesses, organizations and groups whose stories shine a spotlight on important national issues.
  • Preferably, at least five years of reporting experience, including at least some experience with politics, mass shootings and natural disasters.

The exact location of the position will depend on the candidate's qualifications and background, but it should ideally be in a major city in the center of the country, south of Chicago and north of Dallas. It will report to the U.S. News Mid-U.S. Bureau Chief.

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job and examples of your best work.

The Journal's reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards. We report without fear or bias, and we maintain a proper sense of perspective, detachment and objectivity in our reporting.
