Data and digital graphics journalist

The data and digital graphics journalist will produce graphics, interactives and data-led stories for the Times’s digital editions, working with colleagues across both newsrooms and senior news editors.

The successful candidate will be a journalist who understands compelling and cutting edge ways that enliven our journalism, has data analysis, programming and design skills. The candidate will also originate great story ideas.

Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of the data and digital graphics team producing graphics, interactives and data-led stories as agreed with senior editors, while also working on longer-term investigative projects or features

  • Pitch project and investigation ideas to the news desks and senior features editors

  • Understand the news values of The Times and The Sunday Times and be immersed with news and current affairs

  • Curious and actively involved in tracking the evolution of digital graphics across the media industry

  • Help to improve data literacy in the newsroom through training and collaboration with reporters

Skills and experience: 

  • Journalist with strong news judgement

  • Proficiency in using one or more programming languages, such as R or Python, for data collection and analysis

  • Proficiency in spreadsheets and statistical methods: collecting, summarising, analysing and interpreting variable numerical data using Excel or equivalent

  • Proficiency using APIs and scraping websites

  • Experience using visualisation technologies for digital graphics (e.g. D3, QGIS, Adobe Illustrator)

  • Highly organised

  • Able to collaborate with others and work well in groups

  • Can clearly articulate story ideas

  • Able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines

About the digital team:

The Times and The Sunday Times represent a combined 400 years of covering news and providing comment and analysis in the UK and the world.

We are authoritative, credible, responsible, trusted and a part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

This role will join our cross-title digital strategy team. The team is charged with finding and telling stories on our digital platforms in the most appropriate formats and empowering the newsroom to present stories in new and innovative ways.
