Job Description:

Dow Jones Newswires is looking for a digitally proficient financial journalist to write breaking corporate and market news from New Zealand as well as edit and publish such news from around Asia Pacific.

This is a fast-paced job aimed at delivering real-time news to the professional investors who need it. In addition to writing and editing news for the Newswires, the successful candidate will also be responsible for contributing to articles for The Wall Street Journal on an as-needed basis.

You will:

  • Quickly and sharply edit for grammar, style, sense, jargon, accuracy, clarity, diversity and fairness.
  • Identify the most important elements of major news releases, send headlines and quickly write stories and essential updates that will provide professional investors with the news and analysis they need in real time.
  • Chase and break market-moving news and provide real-time coverage of stock markets in Asia with a close eye on big moves in individual stocks and the factors driving them.
  • Uphold Dow Jones standards and ethics in your own work and that of others.

You have:

  • A strong sense of urgency and a well-honed ability to distill market-moving news contained inside press releases.
  • Strong news judgment in headline writing, editing and fast-paced publishing.
  • Strong communication skills and an understanding of how to collaborate remotely with teams based in Singapore and elsewhere in the region.
  • The ability to spot mistakes and ask important questions when there are holes.
  • The ability to generate ideas for stories for WSJ that may be of a more general nature or to step back from breaking news to provide context and analysis.

This position will be based in Wellington or Sydney and reports to the APAC Editor for Newswires in Singapore.

To apply, please submit your resume and a cover letter explaining how your skills, experience and interests align with the requirements of the role. Please also submit up to five clips of articles you have written, preferably about corporate news.

WSJ and Newswires reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards. We report without fear or bias, and we maintain a proper sense of perspective, detachment and objectivity in our reporting.
