Foreign Reporter (casual)

Job Introduction

i is looking for reporters with a solid news background to work on its foreign desk on a freelance basis.

We are looking for talented news reporters to provide additional support to our foreign news team. This is an exciting opportunity for journalists to showcase their talent, flair and contribute to i's growth.

You will be passionate about foreign news and able to produce fast and accurate copy, as well as a mix of features, explainers and breaking news. We are looking for creative and innovative journalists, capable of going beyond the headlines to pitch stories that i’s audience will be interested in. It involves juggling multiple deadlines and working well in a team environment. This role will likely include some weekend cover on Sundays and public holidays.

Please note – this is primarily an office-based role with some home working available.

Main Responsibilities

• Pitch and write foreign news stories daily, including breaking news, long-form reporting, and detailed explainers
• Continuously finding innovative ways to go beyond straight news reports, while still filing stories to strict deadlines
• Ability to write across a broad range of subjects, from business to politics, news, and features
• Collaborating with a team of foreign reporters to improve and develop i’s foreign coverage
• Opportunities to develop specialist coverage areas
• Opportunities to step up into news desk shifts
• Must have availability for shifts on Sundays as part of a rotated pattern with the rest of the foreign team
• Good knowledge of media law and the Editors' Code of Practice
• Commitment to i's editorial standards of impartial and incisive coverage. Appreciation for i's audience and tone, and how to write stories that will appeal to our readers
• Work with the audience team (including analysts, SEO, social, newsletter, and app-editors) to ensure that your stories are optimised to reach the widest readership
• Package your stories with pictures, inline links, and video where necessary to create compelling digital storytelling

 Person Specification

• Minimum 3 years' experience working for a major newspaper or news website (preferred)
• A hunger to report on the biggest issues of the day
• Proven ability to build and maintain contacts
• An enquiring and creative mind to go beyond the headlines.
• Experience working in a digital news environment
• Able to file clean, accurate copy working to demanding deadlines
• Second language a bonus
• Experience of working in a cross-platform environment (desirable)
• Confident with CMS and digital production
• Strong team player who is happy to work collaboratively with others
• Excellent standards of written English
• NCTJ (or similar) standard qualification
