Job Description:

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

The Wall Street Journal internship program is an opportunity for college juniors, seniors and graduate students to be fully immersed in our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom, working with some of the best journalists in the world.

The 10-week, paid full-time internship program offers hands-on work experience, one-on-one mentorship, plus orientation and tailored training sessions. Interns are treated like full-time staff members and are encouraged to pitch their own stories and projects.

We strive to be a welcoming, diverse newsroom. You don't need to be an expert in business or finance to apply, but you do need to be curious and eager to learn. The program has a storied history as a pipeline to a full-time job at the Journal, whether immediately or down the road.

SCIENCE AND HEALTH REPORTING INTERN:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking undergraduates, recent graduates or graduate students who intend to pursue a career in science or health journalism to intern with the Journal's Health & Science team in New York. Whether the internship position leans more heavily toward science or health reporting will depend on the experience and interests of the applicant, and the demands of the news cycle.

You will work closely with reporters and editors to deliver prompt, accurate reporting of health and science news and generally hone your journalistic skills. You will write spot stories based on scientific and medical studies; explanatory pieces that analyze science and health angles related to breaking news; and features that uncover trends in various fields of science and medicine from biology and epidemiology to environmental science and space, among other projects. You are expected to generate your own story ideas and follow the stories through to completion with supervision and guidance from an editor.

Our interns are self-starters with the ability to help develop ideas for graphics and video, as well as social media content to reach audiences on all digital and print platforms. Dedication to high journalism standards, proof of excellent writing skills and dogged reporting are absolute musts.

A health or science background or familiarity with research is a plus but not required. You should have prior reporting experience and a demonstrated interest in medical or science journalism as well as the ability to work independently and under deadline pressure.

The screening process puts heavy emphasis on journalistic experience. You should have completed at least one prior reporting internship with another professional media organization, or published exceptional work with a campus news outlet or as a freelancer.

HOW TO APPLY:

Please submit a resume, cover letter and no more than five published clips (PDFs are ideal). Only complete applications will be considered. The deadline to apply is Monday, Oct. 17, 2022 at noon New York time.

TIMING:

This is a 10-week, full-time internship that would start in January or February. It cannot be completed while taking classes.

Only finalists will be contacted. We will review applications on a rolling basis and strive to make selections before Thanksgiving.

WILL I BE PAID?

Yes, interns are paid $900 per week, and we help with the cost of public transportation. We do not provide housing, but we can help point you in the right direction.
