INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

The Wall Street Journal part-time spring internship program is an opportunity for college juniors, seniors and graduate students to be immersed in our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom, working with some of the best journalists in the world, while continuing to attend school.

The 15-week, paid part-time internship program offers hands-on work experience, one-on-one mentorship, plus orientation and tailored training sessions. Interns are treated like staff members and are encouraged to pitch their own stories and projects.

To apply, students need to live or attend school in the New York or Washington D.C. metropolitan areas, since the spring internship program will be based in those bureaus. Preference would be given to: applicants who come from underrepresented communities; students at local public schools; students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), or Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs); and members of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA) and the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA).

VIDEO INTERNSHIP:

The Wall Street Journal's video internship is based in New York City and designed for students who intend to pursue a career in video journalism.

Your primary duties will include supporting the production of editorially sound and visually compelling videos, as well as publishing videos to wsj.com and off-platform sites including Twitter and YouTube. You should be able to collaborate and clearly communicate with newsroom colleagues and have a strong interest in business and financial news.

Basic video shooting and editing skills, as well as an understanding of video formats and delivery methods, are necessary. The position requires the ability to set up both in-person and remote video interviews. You should be comfortable editing in Adobe Premiere and will set yourself apart if you have experience with graphics in After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator. Social media savviness and experience with vertical video are also a bonus.

Our interns are self-starters who understand the needs of our growing audience across platforms and are able to work independently under deadline pressure. Sound news judgment and dedication to high journalism standards are a must. You will be expected to have the initiative to take on and learn new tasks in a fast-moving environment, while collaborating and communicating with other journalists around the newsroom.

The screening process puts heavy emphasis on work samples and prior experience. You should have completed at least one prior internship with another professional media organization, or done exceptional work with a campus news outlet or as a freelancer.

Note: This is not an internship producing documentaries. There may be some opportunities to shoot original video, but this is primarily a position editing and producing videos.

TIMING:

Spring internships can take place between January and early May to accommodate the schedules of students who are still enrolled in school. Interns will be required to work a minimum of 16 hours to a maximum of 20 hours per week over 15 weeks, depending on their class load. Applicants with availability of at least two full work days are ideal.

Only finalists will be contacted. We will review applications on a rolling basis and strive to make selections before Thanksgiving.

WILL I BE PAID?

Yes, interns are paid a rate of $25.71 an hour, and there may be a stipend to help with the cost of public transportation. We do not provide housing, but we can help point you in the right direction.
