Job Details

The Independent is looking for a talented journalist to join the title’s sport department.

The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for sports writing and editing, with a deep understanding of online sports journalism and what is required from quality live content, news and features.

The right candidate will be an enthusiastic all-rounder who is at home in the fast-paced environment of a modern digital newsroom.

They will understand how to cut through the noise online producing fast, accurate and reliable copy to tight deadlines as well as knowing how to move a story on.

Candidates should also have experience and a clear understanding of how to grow online audiences both on and off platform and be an expert in SEO techniques.

The right person will join a team of journalists who enjoy their work and have taken time to create a clear identity for the brand and grow a loyal audience.

Key responsibilities:

  • Writing content suitable for The Independent.
  • Responding to breaking news and trends.
  • Lead live coverage of news stories and live events.
  • Generate new and interesting content ideas.
  • Sub-editing colleagues' and agency copy.
  • Managing section pages and social media accounts.
  • Work closely with colleagues in the wider editorial team and commercial department.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Journalism qualification.
  • Extensive knowledge of a wide range of sports.
  • Experience of successfully working in a similar role at a similar title.
  • Strong familiarity with The Independent and our coverage.
  • Being a self-starter.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills.
  • Skilled content creator.
  • Ability to clearly communicate.
  • Expert knowledge of trends.
  • Excellent written English.
