Senior Arts Editor - The Conversation UK

Location: London

Remote working available

Full-time

Salary: up to £40,000 (depending on experience)

Application deadline: Monday 5th September 2022

The Conversation is looking for an experienced editor to oversee its arts and culture desk. This is a great opportunity to shape the coverage of a fast-paced online news magazine and work with a team of fantastic journalists and some of the world’s leading academic experts.

Every day, The Conversation publishes articles written by experts from universities across the UK and Europe that explain and analyse the latest news, trends and research. Our stories are written for a general readership, and we aim to bridge the gap between academics and the public via a newsroom of talented journalists, reaching millions of readers around the world each month. In the arts, we cover everything from the new discoveries of art historians to the latest reality TV series.

We’re looking for someone with a strong interest in arts journalism who is full of ideas about how The Conversation’s coverage could be developed to create an unmissable package of arts content. They will be an excellent editor, able to promptly translate complicated ideas into accessible language for a general audience.

They will be a self-starter, able to work effectively and at speed without supervision. But they also need excellent people skills so they can work closely with colleagues on a remote basis and with academic authors with varying levels of experience writing for the public.

On a day-to-day basis, the role will involve devising and developing ideas, liaising with the site’s other arts editors, and working with academic experts on their stories. It will also involve delivering a small number of regular training sessions to academics. For the right candidate, there will also be an opportunity to become a senior copy editor checking articles from across our different desks.

We are a small company that encourages innovation, and there will be opportunities to pitch ideas for long reads, article series and other products, as well as contribute to our podcast and host online panel discussions.

Our HQ is in London but you don’t have to be – remote working is possible. You will have the opportunity to shape your own hours, working around key meetings and deadlines throughout the day and week. We value diversity and are keen to receive applications from people from ethnically diverse and under-represented backgrounds.

Applicants should supply a CV and a cover letter to uk-jobs@theconversation.com explaining why they would be a good fit for the role, including suggestions for five articles that could run in the arts and culture section.
