Assistant News Editor, The Independent

Job Purpose/Responsibilities The Independent is looking for an energetic and enthusiastic assistant news editor to help run a fast-paced national newsroom.

The successful candidate will play a vital part in commissioning, editing and publishing The Independent's news output and so should be organised, talented and a team player. They will be full of ideas, capable of prioritising and breaking news, confident in commissioning reporters, able to think visually and edit copy quickly and accurately. About you: The successful applicant must have experience of news editing at either a regional or national level. They must be a good communicator and be able to make fast and sound news decisions. In addition, they must be able to work closely with reporters and editors.

Key responsibilities: Helping run the news desk

- Commissioning stories for reporters, overseeing The Independent’s widely read live blogs, searching for new news angles and working on a wide variety of stories including politics, health, climate, crime and social affairs.

Editing copy and producing accurate, pithy headlines. Making editorial decisions using a variety of news sources and evaluating stories from rival news outlets. Keeping a sharp eye out for strong traffic-driving stories which will be well read and widely searched. Skills and experience:

Essential: Proven experience of publishing in a regional/national newspaper or news desk Knowledge of digital news NCTJ qualification Working knowledge of SEO Must be prepared to work day shifts, evenings and weekends

Desirable: Experience of running a publisher’s social media accounts Experience using web analytics programmes Continuous Improvement: Works in a smart, flexible and focused way, is open to change and suggests ideas for improvements to the way things are done.

Building Capability – Keeps own knowledge and skill set current and evolving and looks for ways to continue learning to support the achievement of business objectives.

Quality Service – Delivers high quality and efficient service and takes account of the diverse customer needs and requirements when looking at ways to improve service quality. Responsive Delivery - Works to agreed business goals and objectives and deals with challenges in a constructive and responsive way. Takes personal responsibility for quality of outputs.
