About the job
The Publicist is responsible for assisting with day-to-day publicity efforts with The Wall Street Journal newsroom as well as long-term communications strategy to elevate the Journal's reporting, talent, products and overall brand. The ideal candidate will have media relations experience, an extensive knowledge of the ever-evolving media landscape and a passion for informing audiences through fair and balanced reporting. This position reports to the WSJ Business Partner and Senior Communications Manager.
Responsibilities:
• Conceive and proactively pitch WSJ newsroom reporting and secure placement in broadcast and digital media
• Track and record all placements and comprise regular media reports
• Draft press releases and other promotional materials to publicize the newsroom's reporting, talent and products
• Work closely with the internal communications team to effectively relay newsroom wins and department achievements to Dow Jones employees and executives
• Generate and update media lists
• Maintain a strong working rapport with the newsroom
• Work alongside the WSJ Live Journalism team for online and in-person events; pitching and registering press, promoting event highlights for external coverage and compiling comprehensive media reports
• Develop and grow working relationships with key media contacts
• Keep senior management informed of publicity activities and challenges
Basic Qualifications:
• 5+ years of experience in public relations, communications or related field
• Demonstrated experience managing multiple campaigns at any given time
• Must be willing to work a flexible schedule
• Strong writing and presentation skills
• Strong time management and organizational skills
• Enthusiastic team player
• Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment
• Ability and drive to find creative ways to promote the Journal newsroom, talent and products
Requirements:
• BA or BS from a four-year accredited college or university
• Will be based in New York, NY
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with crisis communications and reputation management
• Experience working in television or the media industry
• Established relationships with producers and reporters
• Familiarity with Muck Rack, TVEyes and other media monitoring systems
• Strong understanding of social media integrations; experience running successful social media campaigns preferred
