An exciting start-up seeks experienced reporters, editors and multimedia experts to join our newsroom.

Hyphen, an innovative newly-launched website focused on issues affecting and related to new and established Muslim communities in the UK and Europe, seeks an experienced editor to join its newsroom.

For the right candidates, we offer competitive rates and flexible working opportunities across the full journalistic spectrum, including news reporting, feature writing, long reads and audio-visual content.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work closely with our editor and senior editor to edit and fact-check news stories, features and comment pieces by staff and freelancers.
  • This role requires administrative management of the publishing schedule, commissioning budget and rotas.
  • Maintaining regular and clear communication with editors to ensure all are properly briefed on activities and work schedules, while also assessing and contributing ideas from a network of freelancers.
  • The successful candidate will be comfortable working on both shorter, velocity stories and in-depth narrative features.
  • Occasionally writing or editing swift-turnaround stories.

Requirements:

  • Candidates should have a robust insight into the aspirations and influences associated with new and established Muslim communities into the UK and Europe — across political, social, economic and civil society fields, as well as sport, business, arts and lifestyle.
  • Excellent commissioning, line editing and subbing skills.
  • Effective editorial administrative management skills.
  • A contact book filled with established and emerging writers.
  • A proven track record of delivering engaging stories and a history of generating original and compelling ideas.
  • Must be able to demonstrate sound journalistic practice, such as balance, careful sourcing and a solid, practical understanding of media law.
  • Experience commissioning and collaborating on multimedia content is highly desirable.

Benefits:

  • 30 days paid leave per year.
  • Working from home or in-person reporting with some days in our London office.
