Montel is a fully independent provider of news and analysis with no positions in the markets covered. We provide real-time, accurate, investigative, and balanced news and market coverage of European power and related commodities.

We have a challenging opportunity for a full-time sub-editor to work with one of Europe’s leading energy newswires and would be particularly interested in candidates based in continental Europe, though could also accommodate someone on a hybrid basis in London.

You should be a journalist with at least five years of reporting and/or subbing experience, ideally at a newswire.

A knowledge of the energy sector is ideal, although more importantly the successful candidate understands how financial markets work and has experience working in a busy newsroom environment.

The position will involve working a 40-hour week, with some early mornings required. 

Main duties / skills required:

Reporting to the chief sub-editor, you will be responsible for sub-editing stories for publication on the newswire, adhering to our style guide.

This includes writing engaging headlines and, as some copy is filed by non-native English speakers, reworking stories to ensure they are clear and concise.

A cool head is required, as is a need to prioritise, since Montel’s focus is market-moving stories affecting the European energy markets, with the aim of getting the most newsworthy items out within seconds or minutes of them having been filed.

A keen grasp of figures is also essential as Montel’s core readership relies on daily market reports on price movements of key commodities.

As well as editing stories for the newswire, the sub-editor should have the experience required to produce news copy.

The right candidate will also be given the opportunity to work on longer, features-style pieces for the quarterly Montel magazine. 

The ideal applicant should be a good team player but also able to work on his/her own initiative. Some foreign travel is required as the company hosts and participates in a number of industry events throughout Europe annually.
