Job Description: Trade Reporter (Brussels)

Company: POLITICO

POLITICO Europe is looking for a trade reporter to join our growing Brussels newsroom.

The reporter will work in a team covering one of the most high-profile and contentious global policy issues. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in our reporting of the EU’s trade relations with core partners such as the U.S. and Australia, as well as the high-stakes tensions with Russia and China.

Beyond the big political showdowns, trade is also a highly technical topic and this role will delve deep into the complexities of anti-dumping cases and WTO panels. Trade also increasingly overlaps with Europe’s priorities in technology, tax, the environment and industry, meaning candidates should have an interest in these wider themes.

The successful candidate will have an eye for detail and a track record of rigorous reporting and scoops. They should be a team player, with an understanding of how policy is made and the ability to develop sources within governments, industry organizations and interest groups.

This role would suit a reporter with 2-3 years of newsroom experience looking to join POLITICO to take the next step in their career.

Role & Responsibilities

This reporting role will cater to a sophisticated audience of insiders for POLITICO Pro, our subscription news service, as well as writing for a broader readership at Politico.eu.

We’re looking for a confident source builder: you will be competing in a space where deep sourcing is vital and breaking news is the primary goal. Your reporting and analysis will define how trade topics are dealt with by political leaders, industry giants and others.

Alongside breaking news, you will jointly author a must-read morning newsletter for POLITICO Pro subscribers.

You will also be the public face of POLITICO at events and panels on topics related to trade.

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of newsroom experience;
  • Track record of rigorous reporting and scoops;
  • Strong understanding of how policy is made and influenced by people within governments, lobby groups and industry;
  • Excellent English-language writing skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and on deadline;
  • Knowledge of other European languages is a strong plus.
