Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a photo editor with great range, experience and journalistic integrity, who can produce complex photo assignments, perform strong agency and social media research, and work within a large newsroom setting with bureaus around the world.

You will join a dynamic and fast-paced team of photo editors. This position will be on the US/DC desk, with a focus on national news and politics. The role is based in our New York office and reports to the Deputy Photography Director, News.

You Will:

  • Work quickly and accurately on breaking news and enterprise national stories, collaborating with newsroom's editors, visual teams and section chiefs.
  • Curate and produce visually-led stories in a fast-paced newsroom, anticipating photographic and other needs as stories develop.
  • Work in our CMS to combine different formats, newsroom tools and visual elements.
  • Commission photography, working with our freelance photographers, editors and reporters to tell narrative, investigative, breaking news and enterprise stories on all platforms including mobile and print.
  • Follow department guidelines and safety protocols in working with photographers and subjects.
  • Promote a diverse and exciting group of photographers and subjects, with an eye to building new audiences for our journalism.
  • Pitch visually innovative and original projects and approaches to digital story production, demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.
  • Work with platform and off-platform editors to surface the work strategically across all platforms.
  • Manage budget effectively with quarterly check-ins with supervisors.

You Have:

  • At least 3 years experience in a photo editing role, an enthusiasm for good journalism and current events, and keen news judgment.
  • Proven deep research skills and experience with news gathering and research tools.
  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools. Some knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript a plus.
  • Motivation to work independently as well as with a team.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills and an ability to balance short and long term projects across different sections.
  • The initiative to take on and learn new tasks in a fast-moving environment.

The Journal's reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards. We report without fear or bias, and we maintain a proper sense of perspective, detachment and objectivity in our reporting.
