Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Platform Editor to work with Off Duty, a lifestyle service section that appears in the Weekend print edition and on all digital platforms covering Fashion, Design, Travel, Food and Gear & Gadgets.

You will be responsible for building, executing and deploying daily programming on the Journal's native platforms - including mobile and desktop, as well as social - to inform, engage, delight and grow our audience.

Platform editors employ solid news judgment and knowledge of audience data in daily programming decisions. You should demonstrate sharp writing, strong editing skills and elegant visual thinking. You will mine our reader data for trends and to understand how desks can better connect with and grow their audiences. You will coordinate with the rest of the newsroom at large on programming, social strategy, best SEO practices and more.

This role requires speed and proficiency with digital publishing tools and a strong command of newsroom workflows. The ability to work as part of a team is essential.

You will:

  • Lead the digital efforts of the section, and develop strategies to help it meeting key performance indicators.
  • Spearhead digital innovation efforts.
  • Manage and execute the day-to-day digital publishing objectives of the section.
  • Do additional writing and editing as necessary.
  • Thrive in an atmosphere of constant change and embrace experimentation.
  • Develop a strong network of contacts within the organization with whom you will consult on best practices and strategy.
  • Uphold The Wall Street Journal's high standards and ethics.

You have:

  • Strong judgment in packaging and presenting feature stories.
  • Command of editing and digital headline writing.
  • Sharp proofreading abilities.
  • Good design and visual judgment to enhance digital storytelling packages, including placement of photos, pull quotes, visual elements and other stylish ways to enhance the reading experience. (Digital design background a plus.)
  • Familiarity with the Wall Street Journal's brand, core digital audience, content offering and various digital/print platforms.
  • The ability to edit different types of media, e.g., text, graphics, share text and captions, as part of a strong command of digital publishing tools, including metadata and visual storytelling devices.
  • A proven history of creating informative and engaging packages on digital home pages and within articles.
  • A deep and borderline obsessive understanding of audience data and how to respond to it - from changing the way stories are built, how they're published, ways they're executed or ways they're promoted.
  • An understanding of and ability to consistently execute search-engine optimization across all relevant fields and tags.
  • Strong command of social-media strategies and publishing mechanisms.
  • An ability and willingness to assist in troubleshooting digital publishing issues.

You will report to the Editor of Off Duty and be based in our New York office.

To apply, please submit a detailed resume and a cover letter describing how your experience and skills align with the expectations of this job.
