Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced national economics reporter to tell smart, revelatory and engaging stories through various media.

The position offers wide latitude to explain emerging trends, the evolution of various sectors and the way economic change affects people's lives. The position, based in Washington, will also include coverage of economic data reports and working across multiple platforms, including print, wsj.com, video, podcasts and newswires.

You should be steeped in the use of data to support broad analytical features and compelling visuals, and comfortable covering breaking news at digital speed as well as taking deep dives. The position is in the the heart of the DC economics team, and you would be expected to work in a collegial manner with colleagues on the team as well as the visuals, graphics and podcast departments.

You will:

  • Write ambitious spot news stories that use daily data reports and people's voices to provide a window onto how the U.S. and global economies are evolving in small and big ways.
  • Develop original enterprise stories on global, national and U.S. regional trends mined from economic data and people's experiences.
  • Know or learn easily how to create compelling visual elements to tell stories, including charts, photos and video.
  • Find smart, unexpected insights and analysis about the economy.
  • Work with colleagues on the economics, visuals and podcast teams to conceive and execute bigger projects around major themes and trends.


You have:

 

  • Several years of economics reporting experience with a major news organization.
  • A demonstrated ability to find original approaches to even the most commoditized economic news.
  • A facility with data.
  • A demonstrated ability and desire to bring to life the trends we describe by deeply reporting on people's experiences.
  • A commitment to collegial work on a small, fast-moving team.


You will report to Economics Editor Nell Henderson.
