Newsweek is looking for an experienced Deputy Video Manager to join our growing team. Our ideal candidate will help oversee the video desk in London and manage the day-to-day function of a team of video producers across Newsweek International (mainly Ireland and the U.K.). 

 

This means that you will confidently handle all aspects of the video production process, including finding stories, writing/editing scripts, reviewing and publishing high-quality videos that are fair, accurate and conforms to accepted standards of journalism. You will also help manage expectations, implement production schedules and strategies and manage current needs of the team (training, equipment, time management, etc.). You will report to and work closely with the Video Director, located in the U.S. 

 

Your role as Deputy Video Manager includes being very comfortable with managing others and knowing how to keep calm in stressful situations while keeping the production process going smoothly. You’re an exceptional team player; You’re not afraid to jump in and write a script, edit a news video or help out anywhere. You can handle multiple editing projects of different levels of complexity as well as different editing schedules, and adapt and be flexible to any situation that arises. You are very well-versed in producing different videos for different platforms, whether it be for an interview, social media, a news clip, a short text-on-screen video or an explainer video with graphics. You are able to communicate and collaborate with others effectively across Newsweek, including in different time zones.

 

Role responsibilities: 

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of a team of video producers in Europe
  • Write, edit and review multiple scripts and videos a day from video editors during all phases of video production across various beats and topics
  • Assign projects and enforce deadlines, work well with others
  • Identify and provide video coverage to news stories on our website and work with Editorial teams and managers to identify stories to move into video production and publish on our social media platforms    
  • React to breaking news stories as and when they happen
  • Creatively pitch new ideas and chase stories of interest quickly
  • Check all news videos before they’re published to be sure they meet Newsweek’s editorial standards and represent the brand well. This includes fact-checking names, titles, and numbers, and confirming the content management system node is filled out correctly
  • Onboard and train new hires
  • Set up team schedules in line with Video Director to ensure coverage is in place for any situation
  • Conduct reviews and performance management
  • Help optimize production processes 
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across Newsweek’s global newsroom
  • Follow AP Style
  • Use data and analytics to find areas of growth and success across social media and third-party platforms
  • Upload videos on to our YouTube channel and promote video content over social media

 

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience in a video and post production processes 
  • Must have managed and successfully optimized teams while maintaining a positive work environment
  • Extensive knowledge of how to produce and edit online videos, creative storytelling and journalism 
  • Comfortable handling multiple projects at a time, stay organized and pay attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, eagerness to contribute new ideas and a self-starter
  • Collaborate with other managers and teams to solve problems
  • Ability to deal with changing priorities and a strong team player
  • Strong news judgement across a range of subjects
  • Proficient using Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere, After Effects etc). 
  • Strong awareness of video and editorial content management systems
  • Ability to multitask and stay calm while working under pressure in a deadline-based, high-volume production and fast-paced environment 
  • Have detailed knowledge of producing different videos for different platform
  • Strong business and professional ethics 
  • Must have a keen awareness and detailed knowledge of what makes a great digital video for the Newsweek brand and social media platforms
  • Flexibility to work long hours and weekend shifts if required
  • Knowledge of Photoshop and motion graphics is a huge plus
