Picture Editor

Newsweek is looking for a Picture Editor to join our growing London team.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience of working as a picture editor for other publications, and will be expected to make sure that the images published across Newsweek are of the highest quality.

From sifting through thousands of agency pictures to obtaining rights from local photographers and social media users, the Picture Editor will make sure that the best images are being used across Newsweek’s articles for the maximum impact across the homepage, Google and social media.

The candidate will be expected to have a passion for U.S. news and plan out how to visually achieve maximum impact with our coverage. They will also be required to edit images and captions, with detailed knowledge of Photoshop essential. 

They will show sound editorial judgment and a comprehensive understanding of media law. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring all images used on the site are accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism.

Our office is based in London Canary Wharf but we are definitely open to the potential of working from home.

Key Responsibilities

• Research and identify the best pictures in all Newsweek stories
• Obtaining permission for pictures from local photographers and social media users
• Dealing with requests from editors and reporters for images
• Editing images on Photoshop and tailoring pictures for articles, homepage and social media 
• Edit captions on photos used in articles and make sure all images meet editorial standards 

Requirements

• Experience in a picture editor role for a reputable organization
• Passion for news photography and ability to react to breaking news
• Extensive knowledge of Photoshop and photo-editing software
• Experience uploading and monitoring images on various content management systems 
• Capable of working to tight deadlines 
• Must be able to work flexible hours
