About us

At 10 years old, i is Britain's youngest national newspaper and website. In 2020 we were named Britain’s most trusted national news brand (by industry auditor PAMCo), Daily Newspaper of the Year (London Press Club) and News Website of the Year (Online Media Awards). We publish reporting, opinion and in-depth features for an intelligent audience, and we are proud that our non-partisan journalism offers an antidote to political spin and media bias. Our newsroom is a creative, collegiate and ambitious environment with a strong track record of investing in future talent.

Job Introduction

i is looking for a brilliant deputy features editor to help produce more of our award-winning journalism. You will conceive, commission and edit engaging features for our digital and print audiences, stepping up to edit when required and helping to lead a busy, creative department. You will enjoy a wide remit, from developing digital-first human-interest stories to commissioning news features and long reads, identifying emerging lifestyle trends and working on book extracts. You will commission staff writers, experts and freelance writers. This is an editing role, with the opportunity to introduce new formats.

Main Responsibilities

  • Deputise for the features editor and run the desk when she is away.
  • Regularly attend morning conference representing the features desk.
  • Assist in all aspects of the features editing process, including commissioning, editing copy in digital and print formats and generating brilliant ideas.
  • Forward plan effectively, identifying opportunities for compelling features.
  • Use audience insight to inform ideas and commissioning.
  • Pitch and edit features and long reads online and in print.
  • Work quickly, creatively and accurately under pressure to deadline, to produce superb features.
  • Contribute to the features team’s publishing strategy across all platforms.

Person Specification

  • A self-starter bursting with ideas and a track record in commissioning original and exclusive journalism.
  • Demonstrable desk editing experience.
  • Strong digital publishing experience as well as an understanding of the unique demands of print deadlines.
  • Deft at identifying ideas and trends that can be turned into impactful feature journalism.
  • Experience of working in a multiplatform or digital publishing environment.
  • Confident in giving feedback to commissioned writers and developing relationships with new contacts.
  • A commitment to i's editorial standards of impartial and incisive coverage.
  • Experience with digital CMS desirable.
  • Good knowledge of media law and the Editors’ Code of Practice.

This is primarily an editing role, with some opportunity to write as desk duties allow.

To apply, please complete the application form below enclosing a CV and a cover letter, including three feature ideas that would be suitable for publication online and in print, with suggested bylines. For each idea, please outline how you would tailor publication differently for i’s website and for print, explaining why.
