NEWS EDITOR

City A.M. is looking for an experienced business journalist to lead a talented newsdesk and operate as the editor’s right-hand.

The role is a senior one within our print and digital newsroom. Whilst the right candidate will span both worlds, this role is skewed heavily towards the print side.

The candidate will:

  • Manage a rolling news list to present at news conference and afternoon plot conference with the editor;
  • Contribute story ideas and offer feedback and guidance to reporters;
  • Push reporters to develop stories and features, and to develop their potential as journalists;
  • Provide challenge and input to the editor as decisions are made about daily priorities;
  • Build out the newspaper flatplan on a daily basis, placing stories for the print edition, beforehanding over to the night editor;
  • Work with the design desk to develop innovative ways of telling stories in a daily newspaper;
  • Manage the newsroom rota.

This is the perfect role for an experienced reporter looking to take on additional responsibility or for an editor looking to take a senior role in the production of a daily newspaper. The right candidate will be a right-hand to the editor, and will take the lead on editing the newspaper when the editor is away.

They will also be expected to contribute on the digital side, pushing reporters to file quick clean copy before building out stories for tomorrow’s edition.

City A.M. has weathered an almighty storm over the past two years but has come out stronger, with print circulation roughly equivalent to that before the Covid-19 pandemic and digital traffic far exceeding previous levels. City A.M. is set for a period of strong growth, with a highly skilled group of reporters and a never-more-exciting business world to report on.

To apply, please send a CV and a cover letter explaining what new features, ideas or avenues of investigation you would bring to City A.M. in your first week as News Editor.
