Job Details

AFP JOURNALIST, KINSHASA
Employer: Agence France-Presse (AFP)
Location: Kinshasa
Salary: DoE
Closing date: 24 October 2021

Agence France-Presse (AFP) is looking for an English-speaking reporter in Kinshasa. This is a new job with a considerable scope for the successful candidate to break new ground and stamp her/his mark on the position.

Working with a team of 4 francophone journalists, you will enjoy a great deal of flexibility to work on in-depth subjects, on-the-ground investigations, reporting missions in sometimes difficult-to-reach areas, and complex stories requiring several top-level sources.

The Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo are a gold mine of topics, many of which chime perfectly with AFP’s priorities of the digital world and future of the planet. You will dig in to all these topics and many others, telling the stories of both countries in an African and global context.

Like the other members of the team, you will also work on the conflicts that have been tearing apart the Democratic Republic of Congo for more than 25 years.

Working hand-in-hand with the bureau chief and the rest of the team, you will closely follow the day-to-day news, carefully choosing the best way to report this for AFP.

When time and newsflow allows, you will work up English versions of French stories written by the team. Conversely, the French-speaking journalists in the bureau will produce French versions of your stories.
Being a member of the Kinshasa team will not prevent you from being sent from time to time as a reinforcement to other bureaux when news breaks.

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Fluent French a must.
  • Team player.
  • Initiative and creativity. Speed and quality of writing.
  • A curiosity for investigative reporting, lifestyle topics, environment and biodiversity stories, economic issues, especially mining.
  • A desire to cover conflicts and crises. Experience of on-the-ground reporting.

Required training: Hostile environment training
