Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a photo editor with great range, experience and journalistic integrity, who can work the evening shift. This is a very autonomous role, with responsibilities ranging from monitoring and covering breaking news, to strong, speedy research for newspaper print changes, to story production and builds with the team of digital night editors. It is an opportunity to work within a large newsroom setting with bureaus around the world. You will join a dynamic and fast-paced team of photo editors. The role will start remotely, but will ultimately be based in our New York office. You will report to the Deputy Photography Director, News. Regular hours would be 3-11pm.

  • You Will:
  • Work quickly and accurately on breaking news and enterprise stories, collaborating with photo department colleagues and the newsroom's editors and publishing desk.
  • Operate within our CMS to combine different formats, newsroom tools and visual elements.
  • Collaborate closely with the print editors and evening print team for any photographic changes and news updates for the print pages.
  • Work with print and newsroom leadership for any A1 photo changes.
  • Promote a diverse and exciting range of photography and subjects, with an eye to building new audiences for our journalism and expanding our digital reach and engagement.
  • Work with platform and off-platform editors to surface the work strategically across all platforms.
  • You Have:
  • At least 3 years experience in a photo editing role, excellent news judgment and fast digital editing skills
  • Strong organizational and communication abilities
  • Motivation to work independently as well as with a team
  • The drive to break stories, monitor social media and news, pitch ideas and follow leads
  • Proven deep research skills and experience with news gathering and research tools
  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools
  • The initiative to take on and learn new tasks in a fast-moving environment.
  • A thorough understanding of the brand values and mission of The Wall Street Journal and how our journalism should be selected, executed and presented in line with those values.
