Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Visual Editor to direct visual coverage for our print audience. You will directly manage and inspire a team of graphics specialists to do their best work in a variety of formats, with a strong focus on data visualizations, but also including cartography, 3D, illustrations, and more.

This is a leadership position spanning news and features sections. It's an exciting opportunity to work with an award-winning department to drive ambitious and analytical storytelling with graphics.

In this highly collaborative role, you will report to the Chief Art Director, and co-report to the Director of Graphics. You will also work closely with art directors, page designers, editors and reporters, and digital graphics teams. While you may start this job remotely, you will be based in our New York City office.

We're looking for someone with experience leading a team and managing people, performance and change. You must have a creative vision and excellent news, data and design judgment.

You Will:
  • Prioritize, assign, and direct visual content for the print newspaper.
  • Manage a team of visual specialists, providing mentorship and constructive feedback on projects.
  • Create a portfolio of high-impact visual stories that are analytical, clear, and accurate.
  • Help create smooth processes to work with print editors and art directors on design opportunities.
  • Manage assignments from the Graphics Director and plan for stories where there are opportunities to work closely with digital graphics teams.
  • Create smooth processes to facilitate interchangeability between print and digital graphics with minimum compromise, where possible.
  • Work closely with partners around the newsroom, including photo editors, art directors, digital graphics teams, and reporters and editors from different coverage areas.
  • Keep stakeholders apprised of all projects by maintaining departmental project lists and attending relevant meetings to ensure all milestones and editorial requirements are met.

You Have:
  • At least six years of experience leading a team of visual journalists, or equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience in a newsroom, with excellent news, data and design judgment.
  • Must demonstrate an expansive understanding of information graphics standards.
  • Experience with data journalism and data visualization and associated tools, such as Excel, SQL, R and Python.
  • A creative vision and willing to share and collaborate on new ideas.
  • Experience with people and performance management, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience managing change, creating new processes and workflows.
  • Experience working with digital teams.
  • A deep understanding and appreciation of business news.
