Our reporters in the US and around the globe rigorously report on untold stories and the interconnected issues affecting women and their communities everywhere. Our reporting often leads the news cycle and is published in prominent outlets, bringing the full story to a large and diverse audience.

Since 2015, our team has published hundreds of articles and reached millions of readers. In the past year, we reported on stories such as: an ongoing series on US childcare and childcare workers during the pandemic, a multi-part series on COVID-19 affecting women in India reported on and by 18 local reporters across the country, and an ongoing series on domestic workers and the labor economy across Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. 

Position description

The Deputy Editor is a crucial member of our editorial team and will report to the Editor in Chief to manage and edit core enterprise and investigative news coverage around issues that affect women. This position will oversee and run complex reporting projects, such as a data journalism reporting project or a global reporting series centered on a beat. The Deputy Editor will also work alongside other editors to carry out the Editor in Chief’s editorial vision, run editorial meetings, support hiring, ensure appropriate alignment on stories and manage other day-to-day responsibilities. The Deputy Editor will also collaborate across other functions as needed, such as communications and operations. 

The Deputy Editor is an experienced editor who has managed coverage with deep editorial expertise. They are able to manage a team, oversee complex reporting projects that may involve multiple newsroom partners or multiple staff reporters and freelancers. The Deputy Editor must be able to lead a team, give direct feedback and edit copy with expertise and empathy. They view stories through the lens of impact and accountability, see trends and can assign stories for longer-range coverage.

The ideal candidate shares a passion for our mission, is someone who is excited to roll up their sleeves and build, has a track record of managing and editing others, has collaborated with other newsroom partners, and is a strong enterprise and investigative editor. A focus on impact and a collaborative orientation is essential. Ideal candidates will also have the following background and skills: 

  • Deep understanding of the US and global news cycle and coverage of topics such as: health, labor and economics, migration, environment, and foreign policy 
  • Ability to apply that understanding to women and communities often left out of the mainstream narrative 
  • Veteran editor with at least 10 years of experience who can independently move partnerships and reporting forward 
  • Ability to juggle many priorities and is an expert people manager, budget manager, project manager and partner manager
  • Experience managing journalists of varying levels, leading editorial meetings, and guiding others to meet assignment goals and see their reporting from a deeper angle 
  • Eye for editing stories, asking key questions: “Whose voice is missing from the conversation? What is the historical or systemic context surrounding this issue? How can we go deeper?”
  • Willingness to receive and act on feedback and be edited by peers 
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and work independently in a low structure environment 
  • Understanding of a nonprofit newsroom, including working with business-side functions such as development and communications
  • Passionate for and demonstrated commitment to the mission and core values of The Fuller Project
  • Ability to work productively in an independent, non-partisan environment, guided by journalism ethics

This position can work remotely and can be based outside the US. Candidates should be willing to support team members in other time zones, such as Europe and South Asia. Data and investigative editorial experience is not necessary but is considered a plus.
