Job Description:

Summer 2022 F. James Pensiero Reporting Internship with The Wall Street Journal

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

The Wall Street Journal internship program is an opportunity for college juniors, seniors and graduate students to be fully immersed in our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom, working with some of the best journalists in the world.

The 10-week, paid full-time internship program offers hands-on work experience, one-on-one mentorship, plus orientation and tailored training sessions. Interns are treated like full-time staff members and are encouraged to pitch their own stories and projects. The summer 2021 interns reported front-page news, created interactive graphics, edited photo projects, wrote colorful features, produced videos, curated and published our journalism across platforms, and much more.

We strive to be a welcoming, diverse newsroom. You don't need to be an expert in business or finance to apply, but you do need to be curious and eager to learn. The program has a storied history as a pipeline to a full-time job at the Journal, whether immediately or down the road.

F. James Pensiero Reporting Internship

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a current student or recent graduate who intends to pursue a career in business and financial journalism to work in New York for a summer internship. This scholarship-funded position includes a stipend to help with housing or travel costs.

You will work closely with reporters and editors to deliver prompt, accurate reporting of news relevant to your beat. You will be expected to generate your own story ideas and follow the stories through to completion with supervision and guidance from an editor.

Our interns are self-starters who understand the needs of our growing audience on various digital and print platforms and can work independently under deadline pressure. Dedication to high journalism standards and excellent writing and reporting skills are a must. A demonstrated interest in business reporting is a plus, though prior business/finance reporting experience is not required.

Preference for the scholarship internship will be given to University of Oregon students, though it is open to those from any state school in the U.S. Students majoring in business journalism or journalism with a second major or minor in economics or business will have an edge.

The screening process puts heavy emphasis on journalistic experience. You should have completed at least one prior reporting internship with another professional media organization, or published exceptional work with a campus news outlet or as a freelancer.

The internship is named in honor of F. James Pensiero, who worked at The Wall Street Journal for 31 years in a variety of editing and management assignments ranging from copy editor to associate publisher. Jim was chosen by WSJ managing editor Paul Steiger to accept the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting awarded to the Journal for its coverage of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the U.S. He retired as deputy managing editor in 2015.

HOW TO APPLY:

Please submit a resume, cover letter and no more than five published clips (PDFs are ideal). You must also submit a one-page essay explaining why you want to cover business, finance or economic news. Only complete applications will be considered. The deadline to apply is Nov. 1, 2021.

TIMING:

Summer internships take place over June, July and August, though start dates can be flexible in certain circumstances.

Only finalists will be contacted. We will strive to make a selection by the end of January.

WILL I BE PAID?

Yes, interns are paid $900 per week, and we help with the cost of public transportation.

This scholarship internship also includes a $3,000 stipend to assist with housing or travel costs. We do not provide housing, but we can help point you in the right direction.
