Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced news photo editor to join our team of dynamic and fast-paced photo editors. The Lead World Photo Editor will be responsible for running photographic coverage on our World News desk. You will work closely with the World Coverage Chief, international deputies and bureaus, along with fellow photo editors and visuals colleagues. You will direct breaking news coverage, make decisions and recommendations related to other coverage priorities and Enterprise assignments, oversee desk planning and annual budget and take a lead role in pitching and creating visual and multimedia stories. You will schedule and run regular meetings with photo and visual colleagues and reporters, also working closely with the London and Hong Kong bureaus and our London-based International Photo Editor.

The position requires great range, editorial judgement and journalistic integrity, as well as the ability to produce complex photo assignments, perform strong agency and social media research, and work quickly and effectively within a large newsroom setting with bureaus around the world. We're looking for someone who has at least 4 years experience in a senior photo editing role.

You will report to the Deputy Director of Photography. While you may start this job remotely, you will be based in our New York office.

You Will:
  • Lead a small desk photo team, producing and building visual assets for our digital World news and enterprise content, anticipating photographic needs as stories develop.
  • Drive excellence in assigning and research for the World bureaus on our news, narrative, investigative, feature and enterprise coverage for all platforms.
  • Coordinate closely with the International Photo Editor and broader team of photo editors, communicating the daily content and any staffing coverage needs.
  • Edit, pace and build powerful visual stories, incorporating multimedia and other elements for long-form journalism and for innovative storytelling tools.
  • Pitch and develop visual stories. Also work with reporters and editors to shape ideas into visual story opportunities.
  • Focus on working with a diverse range of subjects and photographers, keeping new and young audiences in mind.
  • Show great editorial judgement, working with WSJ editors and legal department in the case of vetting, copyright and ethics questions.
  • Collaborate with the audience and platform teams on social strategy and distribution of WSJ content.
  • Work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • Prioritize best opportunities for visual stories using judgment based on newsroom and departmental strategy and resources.
  • Maintain a monthly budget within the department for assigning.

You Have:
  • A minimum of 4 years experience in a newsroom.
  • An enthusiasm for good journalism and current events, coupled with keen news judgement and ethics.
  • Strong organizational, communication, leadership and collaborative abilities
  • Proven deep research skills
  • The initiative to take on and learn new tasks
  • Good knowledge of responsive design and best practices for building stories for mobile devices.
  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools. Experience with news gathering, Satellite and research tools.
  • Basic coding skills a plus.
